This glossary defines commonly used dermatitis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of dermatitis and other skin conditions that co-exist with dermatitis, such as acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.

Candida: Candida favors warm, moist areas, so often occurs under the armpits and in the genital area. The skin becomes inflamed and itches, and may develop red lesions or rashes.

CapexTM Shampoo: (fluocinolone acetonide) Topical Shampoo, a steroid used in the treatment of severe dandruff. By Galderma.

Carbon Dioxide Laser: (CO 2) laser is used in the treatment of infected wounds, scar tissue, warts, and other skin disorders. Use carries a risk of burns to the skin.

Cercarial dermatitis: also called Swimmer's itch, is a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to infection with certain parasites of birds and mammals

Cetacort®: (Hydrocortisone) a low potency steroid. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cetacort®, Nutracort®, Anusol-HC®, Hytone®, Cort-Dome®, Locoid®, Cortenema®, Cortifoam®, Cortaind®, Lanacort®, Westcort®

Cetaphil®: Cleanser is a lipid-free cleanser. Manufactured by Galderma.

Cheiropompholyx: (Dyshidrotic Dermatitis of the hands)

Cheilitis: inflammation of the skin on and around the lips. Commonly occurs in atopic dermatitis

Chemical Peels: a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells.

Chicken pox: symptoms include red blisters that cause itching. Chicken pox rarely causes lasting scars in spite of the urge to scratch the blisters.

Chronic: A condition that is continuous or persistent over an extended period of time. The opposite of acute. A chronic condition is one that is long-standing, not easily or quickly resolved.

Clinical trial: investigational studies of new treatments, new uses of existing treatment, or new screening methods to detect disease.

Clobetasol: a corticosteroid used to reduce itching, redness, and swelling associated with many skin conditions. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cormax®, Embeline™ E, Temovate®

Clobetasol Propionate: high potency corticosteroid for the relief of the inflammation and itching. Also sold under the brand name: Clovate®.

Clocortolone pivalate: a mid-potency corticosteroid cream for the treatment of inflammation and itching effective in treating stasis dermatitis, eczema/atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrhea. Also sold under the brand name: cloderm

Cloderm®: by Penederm, (clocortolone pivalate), a mid-potency corticosteroid cream for the treatment of inflammation and itching effective in treating stasis dermatitis, eczema/atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrhea

Clovate®: by Glaxo Wellcome, (Clobetasol Propionate.0,05%) high potency corticosteroid for the relief of the inflammation and itching

Coal tar bath: Topical coal tar preparations are used to treat the scaling, inflammation and itching of psoriasis and other skin disorders. The coal tar solution is added to bath water for greater coverage and penetration.

Colloidal silver: a suspension of submicroscopic metallic silver particles in a colloidal base. Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray.

Comedogenic: (pronounced coh-me-dough-jen-ic) refers to anything that tends to clog pores and produce comedones, commonly called blackheads.

Comedones: small, flesh colored, white, or dark bumps that give skin a rough texture. The bumps are found at the opening of a sebaceous follicle (pore). Whiteheads and /or blackheads. Frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne.

Contact dermatitis: type of dermatitis that results from direct contact with one of many irritants or allergens. Common irritants include laundry soap, skin soap and cleaning products. Possible allergens include rubber, metals, jewelry, perfume, cosmetics and weeds such as poison ivy. Signs and symptoms include redness and itching. In severe cases, you may have blisters and weeping sores.

Contagious: capable of being transmitted from person to person.

Cortaind®: Hydrocortisone – a natural chemical made by the body which reduces swelling, itching, inflammation and burning. The most common prescribed and/or over the counter steroid. Corticosteroids: a class of substances related to a natural hormone that can diminish an inflammatory response such as itching or irritation of the skin. Synthetic steroids used topically as anti-inflammatory, anti-itch agents.

Cortifoam®: Hydrocortisone – a natural chemical made by the body which reduces swelling, itching, inflammation and burning. The most common prescribed and/or over the counter steroid. Very low potency steroid. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cetacort®, Nutracort®, Anusol-HC®, Hytone®, Cort-Dome®, Cortenema®, Cortaind®, Lanacort®, Locoid®, Westcort®

Cortisone: (steroid) skin preparations similar to hydrocortisone. The medicines in this group differ primarily by the strength of each compound. Their purpose is to decrease local swelling, inflammation, burning and itching.

Cradle cap: a form of seborrheic dermatitis characterized by crusty, scaly skin on your baby's scalp. Cradle cap usually doesn't appear in children older than 1 year.

Curatoderm: (Taealcitol) Crookes Pharmaceutical. This product for mild to moderate plaque psoriasis was launched in 1996. It is on prescription only. It is the first Vitamin D treatment for Psoriasis that has a once daily application. A single application - preferably at night time - lasts up to 24 hours. This treatment can be used safely on the face and on soft areas of the body.

Cutivate®: By Glaxo Welcome, (Fluticasone) a corticosteroid used to reduce itching, redness, and swelling associated with many skin conditions available as a cream or ointment.

Cyclosporine: a powerful prescription drug that decreases the body's abnormal immune response.

Cytokine: a large group of molecules that regulate interactions in the immune system. Cytokines are messengers that carry biochemical signals to regulate local and systemic immune responses, inflammatory reactions, wound healing, formation of blood cells, and many other biologic processes.

Cysts: A cyst is a closed pocket or pouch of tissue. It can be filled with air, fluid, pus, or other material.
